Alexander Volkov is a mammoth, six-foot-seven problem in UFC’s heavyweight division.

The Russian is in action this weekend against the unbeaten Cyril Gane. He sits fifth in the heavyweight rankings and a win here could catapult him into the conversation as a future opponent for Francis Ngannou.

Volkov is 33-8 in the octagon but his last outing saw a huge win over Alistair Overeem.

talkSPORT had the chance to catch up with the 32 year old ahead of his showdown with Gane and ask a few questions.

On Francis Ngannou becoming heavyweight champion…

“He’s a great fighter. A big, strong guy. He was very underrated, now I think the question is how will he deal with fame. In Russia we have a proverb. You go through the water, fire and trumpets and that’s usually the hardest test.

“So we’ll see how he goes through the trumpets because it will be hard to get up from the silk sheets and to have a desire to stay champion.

“I know, I went through it in other organisations.

“So it’s a very beautiful moment for him. We will see how he evolves as a fighter after all of this what is now happening to him. We will see if he has the heart of a true champion.

On only losing to top UFC heavyweights like Derrick Lewis and Curtis Blaydes…

“Every loss has pushed me forward. Every win makes you think about victory, greatness etc, but the loss, it forces you to become a better fighter.

“I see my losses as why I am who I am right now.”

On what it meant to beat Alistair Overeem…

“When I beat Overeem, I really feel like I was the best me while training for it and the best me that ever fought. That’s for sure.”
On what he expects from Gane…

“I think he will try to break me because he is on a winning streak and has never lost in his life but I will show him I won’t break. He never fought anyone like me and he’ll be very surprised during our fight.”

On why he accepted a fight against an unbeaten fighter so close to getting a title shot…

“Please ask this question to my manager who has since left [laughs]. Usually I am the one who decides who I fight because I can fight anyone!”
