Barcelona are reportedly hoping to announce Lionel Messi’s new contract in the first week of August.
Messi has been a free agent since the beginning of July but it’s understood the Argentine is keen to extend his stay.
However, the pressure is on to get the deal announced by the end of next week as Barca have a friendly with Juventus lined up on August 8.
That would see Messi line up against fellow football great Cristiano Ronaldo, who plies his trade with Juve.
The Spanish side will take on the Italian giants in the Joan Gamper Trophy at Barca’s iconic home.
The Catalonia club are yet to meet Messi’s terms as they struggle to balance the books and it’s thought they may have to sell some players in order to do so.
Spanish publication Sport claims Barca’s powers that be are hoping to confirm the Messi contract in time for the match against Ronaldo’s Juventus.
Messi and Ronaldo, who have largely been the two main contenders to win the Ballon d’Or since 2008, have faced each other 36 times in their glittering careers.
This showdown wouldn’t go down in the official record books but Messi vs Ronaldo matches have been hard to come by ever since the Portuguese left Real Madrid in the summer of 2018.
Ronaldo is in the final year of his contract in Turin and it’s thought the deal will not be extended.
