Dana White has revealed he once had to stop Conor McGregor from making a $3million bet on himself to knock out Chad Mendes in the second round of their UFC 189 clash back in July 2015.

Before the boxing, the money, the whiskey and the clothing range, ‘The Notorious’ was just a humble kid from Ireland with a dream of becoming UFC champion.

After running through the featherweight division in less than two years, McGregor had put himself in pole position for a shot at reigning champion Jose Aldo at the start of 2015 with his defeat of Denis Siver.

Following their gruelling world tour and numerous press commitments, McGregor thought his chance was taken from him just weeks before the fight when Aldo pulled out with a broken rib.

Undeterred, McGregor simply asked for a replacement fighter and the interim belt to be put on the line, with Mendes stepping up at short notice for the fight in Las Vegas.

Although it was not pound-for-pound king Aldo standing in front of him, the Irishman was still facing the dangerous Mendes – a man who had only lost twice from 19 pro MMA fights and the Brazilian inflicting both of them.

The American may well have been known as ‘Money’, but it was McGregor who was making serious waves in the sport at this time and he even tried to place a large wager on himself, only for White and Lorenzo Fertitta to stop him.

White told the story on The Jim Rome Show, saying: “You want to know how confident this kid is? I can’t even believe I’m going to say this, but, he told Lorenzo and I the other day ‘I’ll bet you $3 million I knock him out in the second round.’

“I like to bet, I don’t know if I’m that willing to take that bet,” White added. “When I tell you how extremely confident this guy is in himself, it’s fascinating.

“He is a very unique, fascinating person to listen to. Fun to listen to, and fun to watch.”

McGregor would claim the interim 145lbs title via a second-round stoppage of Mendes at the MGM Grand, which set up an undisputed featherweight title fight with Jose Aldo later that year.

Of course, what happened next will go down in MMA folklore as McGregor landed a crushing left hook after just 13 seconds which rendered the champion unconscious and started a new era for both the sport and the UFC.
