The ‘Diamond’ is currently recovering after losing to Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 in their lightweight title bout, his second failed attempt at a world title.

Not one to be deterred, Poirier instantly moved on from the loss in Las Vegas and has already targeted a fight with Diaz, potentially at welterweight.

The two men were set to meet at UFC 230 back in 2018, only for Poirier to pull out with an injury, yet the Louisiana-native appears determined to get his hands on Diaz this time around.

Diaz wrote on Twitter: “I’ll fight Dp in January don’t be a scared lil b**** this time now or never.”

Instantly, Poirier told the Stockton Slapper he would ‘fight him this month’ and Diaz retorted by saying, ‘Ur full of s***.’

After confirming he was serious, Poirier joined Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour and insisted he would definitely travel up to welterweight to make the fight happen having failed twice already to capture lightweight gold.

“I don’t know if I’m going to fight at 155 pounds again,” Poirier said. “I felt smooth, I felt great but that’s because I did all the things I was supposed to.

“I don’t know if I want to go through that training camp again. Being hungry in the gym, etc. I don’t know what’s going to happen. “

Diaz has not fought since June when he was outclassed by Leon Edwards. It is understood he has resolved his contract situation with the UFC and Poirier could well be his next opponent.

“When I’ve been laying down and thinking about fights, nothing gets me excited right now,” Poirier said. “Unless Nate Diaz wants to fight, if he wants to fight that gets me excited.

“That would be great, I don’t know what plans they have with the UFC with negotiations, I’m healthy and we’ll see what happens. I just want to be excited to fight again.”
