Manchester United are reportedly closing in on landing top target Frenkie de Jong in an €85million deal.
The Barcelona midfielder has been linked with an Old Trafford move ever since his former Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag, joined the Premier League side at the end of last season.
And now it appears that a reunion between the two may be on the cards with transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that Barca’s asking price is close to being reached.
After a €65m [£56m] verbal bid, the Spanish giants have asked for €85m [£73m] with add-ons now being discussed to reach that figure and talks could be concluded this week.
The Dutch international moved to the Camp Nou in 2019 for €75m [£64m] but has struggled to make his mark on Spanish football.
Academy graduates Pedri, Gavi and Nico have instead shone, meaning cash-strapped Barca see De Jong as their best chance of raising funds this summer.
Before moving to Spain, De Jong made his breakthrough in Amsterdam under Ten Hag’s stewardship, emerging as a top talent in Ajax’s run to the 2019 Champions League semi-finals.
The 52-year-old is clearly still a fan of his prodigy, with United in desperate need of reinforcements in the centre of the pitch after losing Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata to free agency.
