Lee Mason sparked mass confusion during West Brom’s clash with Brighton on Sunday.
The Seagulls endured a frustrating first-half at the Hawthorns as they trailed to Kyle Bartley’s 11th-minute goal and then missed the chance to equalise from the penalty spot through Pascal Gross.
And it got worse for Brighton when Lewis Dunk thought he had equalised when his quick free-kick caught out West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in the 29th minute.
Despite blowing his whistle for Dunk to take the free-kick, referee Mason disallowed the goal, which led to protests from Brighton players.
In a manic five minutes, Mason then allowed the goal to stand, only for VAR to rule it out due to the official blowing his whistle a second time before the ball had crossed the line.
The free-kick was eventually retaken by Dunk, whose effort was comfortably saved by Dunk.
