Newcastle target Diego Carlos is ‘not for sale’, meaning the Magpies now have to look for an alternative with just five days remaining of the transfer window.
In a huge blow for the Magpies, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano is reporting Sevilla do not want to sell the Brazilian centre-back who is not set to remain with the LaLiga club.
Eddie Howe’s side recently saw a £25million bid rejected for the defender, with the Spanish outfit insisting their asking price is significantly higher.
Newcastle are then said to have upped their offer to £30m, with Carlos attempting to force Sevilla’s hand by pushing for the move.
The 28-year-old has established a fearsome reputation as a no-nonsense enforcer since arriving in Europe since signing for Estoril in Portugal in 2014.
However, Newcastle are now ‘exploring other options’, according to Romano, after failing to agree on a fee for the defender.
“The Sevilla board have decided to keep Diego Carlos,” wrote the football reporter on Twitter.
“After long negotiations with Newcastle and two bids turned down, Sevilla have NO intention to sell Brazilian centre back in the final days of the window.
“Sources close to Sevilla assure that position won’t change: Diego Carlos is not for sale and will stay, the decision was made yesterday and communicated to Newcastle.
“Newcastle are now exploring other options.”
The likes of Brighton’s Dan Burn, Burnley’s James Tarkowski, Sven Botman on Lille, and Liverpool’s Nat Phillips have all been linked with a move to St James’ Park as Howe looks to strengthen his back line.
Jesse Lingard also appeared close to a move to Tyneside – but he is another player Newcastle will now have to find an alternative for, adds Romano.
The Manchester United midfielder, who has barely played this season after impressing for West Ham last term, looked like he would be a Newcastle player by the end of the transfer window.
But the Magpies have been priced out of a loan move for the England international and will now have to look elsewhere.
Tottenham’s Dele Alli could be the man they now turn their attention to.
