Raheem Sterling has been advised to join Chelsea amid reports the Manchester City star is set for a shock move to Stamford Bridge.
It was reported that Sterling has emerged as a contender to join the Blues, who are looking for a new forward with Romelu Lukaku set to join former club Inter Milan on loan.
Should Sterling decide to make the move he’d be leaving behind a Man City side that retained their Premier League crown, however, Andy Townsend believes the England star going to Chelsea could work well for him.
“I don’t think it would be a bad thing now for Raheem to have a change,” Townsend told talkSPORT.
“I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all for him, to move to a club like Chelsea. It’s always an added bonus to come and play for a London club, living in London and being around London is what top players would prefer of course.
“He’s shown at City that he can operate at the very top. If Chelsea can get that done at £40million they should bite City’s hand off.”
Although he won his fourth Premier League title, the 2021/22 season was a frustrating campaign for Sterling, who struggled for consistent starts in the first-team.
He was competing with the likes of Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez for starting spots but talkSPORT’s Danny Murphy believes Sterling is better than the pair, however, the 27-year-old can’t quite be considered a world-class player.
“I define world-class as the best players in the world… he’s probably the next tier below,” Murphy said.
“The best players in the world should be a small bracket of players. When you talk about world-class players you’re talking about Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, that type who are world-class players… you can’t throw world-class as a blanket.”
“I think if you look at City’s attacking talent… would you have Grealish ahead of Sterling? I wouldn’t,” Murphy added. “I’m a big fan of Grealish but I think Sterling’s better.
“I’d have Sterling ahead of Mahrez although Mahrez is a terrific player but I think you get more defensively out of Sterling… in a big game I’d have Sterling over him.
“Does Sterling get in my best XI? He does for me but he doesn’t for Pep so it looks like they’ll let him go.
“If I was a Chelsea fan I’d be more than happy having Sterling.”
