Joseph Parker briefly showed a different side to his personality as he confronted Joe Joyce team member Shane Watson after their press conference on Thursday.
The heavyweights will meet for the WBO ‘interim’ belt on Saturday night in Manchester after long and protracted negotiations with plenty of back-and-forth between the two camps.
Parker is often a very light-hearted and engaging individual, thought by many to be once of the nicest men in heavyweight boxing.
However, he is ultimately a tough fighter at heart and proved this as he took Watson to task over comments he’d made in recent weeks.
Parker did not specify exactly which remarks had irked him, but the young Chief Operating Officer of Joyce’s management team SJAM was understandably taken aback when suddenly confronted by the heavyweight.
Parker interrupted as Watson was giving an interview to Pro Boxing Fans.
“Why are you interviewing him?” the New Zealander asked from the background.
Watson reacted: “Ooh, here we go, here he is, Joseph Parker.”
At this point, Parker joined the interview and asked: “Why are you doing interviews?”
Watson replied: “Part of the team, innit? Part of the team.”
Parker pressed: “Are you? What’s your job?”
To which Watson answered: “Chief Operating Officer of SJAM.”
Parker then said: “Are you? For real? You’ve been talking a whole lot of c***.”
Watson responded: “Yeah, we’ve all been talking, haven’t we?”
Parker then continued to press Watson on the issue, resulting in an awkward stand-off in which the heavyweight stared directly at the youngster, who understandably didn’t hold his gaze for very long before looking away.
To his credit though, Watson did not back down from his words.
At this point, Parker burst out laughing, shook his rival’s hand and resumed his normal, nice guy personality.
“Listen, we’re just having fun,” Parker added before departing.
“All fun and games,” Watson added.
